7 Quick Takes: Pope Pictures, Confirmation, Our Blessed Mother's Birthday, Tea Time, 9/11, and Etc.

It's another Friday which means another opportunity to link up to 7 Quick Takes hosted by Kelly at This Ain't the Lyceum.   Here is this week's edition.

1
This past weekend, my 11 year old daughter and I went into our local Catholic bookstore to shop for my oldest daughter's Confirmation gift and we ran into the Pope...sorta!  I think the picture on the left looks more "real" than the one on the right.  :)

And I have to show you this painting of Pope Francis by my artist friend, Cameron Smith!  This is his latest masterpiece! Isn't it amazing and beautiful?  Cameron is so talented!  Be sure to check out his website and the different size prints available for purchase just in time for our Pope's visit to the United States in a few weeks!

This is a photo we took at a yummy yogurt shop that we visited this past week after my daughter and I went to her Confirmation rehearsal.  My oldest daughter will receive the sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday, Sept. 12 at our parish.  What an exciting weekend it will be!

These two gentlemen make my heart happy.
Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. -Proverbs 22:6

 4
On Sept. 8, our homeschool group met for morning Mass for our Blessed Mother's birthday.  After Mass we had our annual donut rosary, prayed a decade of the rosary, and sang "Happy Birthday to Mary!"  It was a joyous day, even if we neglected to set up one more decade of the donut rosary!  None of the moms or kids noticed that our rosary was not complete until after the picture was taken and the donuts were devoured.  Well, our Mother Mary knows it was the thought that counts! :)

5
I like to call this photo "Studious Sisters".  :)  I snapped this photo this week as I was putting my youngest down for her afternoon nap.  My 7 year old was reading to my 2 year old as my 2 year was "reading" like her big sister.

My 7 year old daughter wrote this message on the board, "I have a Mommy and a Daddy and I love them."  Melted my heart even as my 2 year old was screaming and mad because she couldn't write on the white board while my daughter asked me to take her picture of her wonderful sentence. :)

 6
We had our first "Tea Time" over 7 years ago when I was pregnant with Baby #4.  My goal is to have Tea Time each week where we read the upcoming Sunday's readings and discuss them. We have a special treat, drink from our tea cups in the dining room, light a candle and set the table with the liturgical color of the season (now green for Ordinary time) While the Scriptures are being read, my kids eat and some color pages from CatholicMom.com that go with the Gospel reading.  We haven't had Tea Time consistently because of life, but my kids have been asking for this special time each week for awhile so today was the first Tea Time for the 2015-2016 school year.

And we rarely have tea. Usually our Noah's Ark pitcher is filled with milk to go with the sweet treats. "Milk Time" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "Tea Time" so Tea Time it is. :)

14 years ago today...I remember so many details of that day as so many do.  I plan to read the book  The Little Chapel That Stood, to my children today after we attend morning Mass to pray for all those who died and for the family and friends they left behind.  Reading this book has become our annual tradition to remember 9.11.  It is a beautifully written and illustrated book that I highly recommend for anyone with young children.

Here is the product description from Amazon:

St. Paul's Chapel, dwarfed by the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center right across the street, stood strong after the "giants around it had come to a fall" in 9-11. Not a pane of glass had been broken. On 9-11 St.Pauls became a service dept immediately. Firemen hung their shoes on the old iron fence as they "pulled on their boots and raced to the Towers, climbing melting steel to flaming showers. Oh, what gallant men did we lose who never came back to get their shoes."
This historic chapel was built in 1766. When George Washington was inaugurated the first president in New York City, he walked down Broadway to St. Paul's to offer his prayers for the new nation. Alexander Hamilton lies buried in the churchyard nearby.

Inside the book cover I have these two pictures taped that were taken when my boyfriend, now husband, went to New York to visit my grandparents in August 1993.   My grandparents lived in Bronx, NY, but Anthony and I went into the city and made it up to the top of the Twin Towers.

Who knew that 8 years later on 9.11.01 these pictures would give me such a strange and sad feeling??  And that many years later I would be showing these photos to my children with such a heavy heart?

We remember and pray today for all the lives that were lost on 9-11 in the air and on the ground in  NY, PA, and at the Pentagon.  We especially remember and pray for the victims' families and friends whose lives have been directly affected and have never been the same.  I can't imagine how so many must feel....

May God bless America!

7 Quick Takes a Few Days Late...Races, Mary's Birthday, Anniversary, 9-11, Blog Break

This post contains affiliate links.

I have posted 7 Quick Takes hosted by Jennifer at Conversion Diary many times before, but last Friday was not one of those times.  One reason I missed last Friday is because life for me is going faster than I can catch up sometimes!  I'm sure many of you can relate...

So here's 7 Quick Takes a few days late as I blog about last week and events coming up this week...

-1-
My oldest daughter ran in a 5K race last weekend with some of the members of her homeschool cross country team.  I also ran the race along with my other daughter, though we didn't register and get a bib.  It was a great race and the team did so well!  My younger daughter beat me and her sister.  Despite the heat, it was a great time and I'm so proud of my girls for their good run!

-2-

Speaking of 5K races, my oldest daughter had another 5K race with her homeschool cross country team this past Saturday.  It was cloudy and stormed a little so the trails were wet and muddy.  There were schools from all over the state competing in the various races.  Our ream ran hard and had a great time!

-3-
Today, Sept. 8, is the our Blessed Mother's birthday.  Our homeschool group plans to meet for Mass in the morning and then if the weather corporates (we have been getting a lot of rain lately) we will go to a local park and have our annual birthday party for our Blessed Mother complete with a doughnut rosary.  Here is my post from last year about our annual birthday celebration. If you want more great ideas to celebrate Mary's birthday, be sure to check out Monica's post HERE from Arma Dei: Equipping Catholic Families for more fun ideas!

-4-

Tuesday, Sept. 9, my parents will celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary!  WOW!  I'm so very grateful for my parents and blessed to live close to them to share memories with them with my family.  Thank you Dad and Mom for sticking through the good times and the not so good times, through sickness and health.  Congratulations! I love you!

-5-
This week is also another year since Sept. 11, 2001.  HERE is my blog post from last year with memories and photos of the trip my husband (then boyfriend) took to NY and went to the top of the Twin Towers.   Each year I try to read The Little Chapel That Stood to my children about that incredibly sad day.  It's not easy to read it and I can't imagine what so many are still dealing with from this sad time.

-6-
Me with my two older brothers and younger sister at my sister's wedding in Oct. 2012
At the end of this week I'm so excited that my family will be getting together for the first time in 2 years!  The last time we all were together was at my younger sister's wedding in October 2012.  We are heading for a beach vacation soon with my parents, my two brothers and their families and my younger sister and her family!  Since two years ago we have added 2 babies to my parent's grandchildren count, one being our littlest one!  So for the first time my parents will be surrounded with all their children (me and my 3 siblings) and their 8 grandchildren!  It will be a fun time and what a great way to have my parents celebrate their wedding anniversary this week!

With a busy week this week and preparing for a family vacation, I'm not sure  the next time I'll be updating my little corner of blog land here.  This upcoming time with my family will be so precious for so many reasons so I want to savor the memories as much as possible.  But, I hope to update my blog with all the family fun when I can!  Have a blessed week!

Remembering 9.11.01 with Memories, Book, and Photos

This post contains affiliate links.

I've posted my memories about 9.11.01 HERE where I blogged about what I was doing on that shocking, sad, overwhelming and tragic day in our history.

This morning I will read again the book, The Little Chapel That Stood, to my 5 children.  It has become our annual tradition to remember 9.11.  It is a beautifully written and illustrated book that I highly recommend for anyone with young children.  Here is the product description from Amazon:

Who knew that 8 years later on 9.11.01 these pictures would give me such a strange and sad feeling??  And that 20 years later I would be showing my children these photos with such a heavy heart?

We remember and pray today for all the lives that were lost on 9-11 in the air and on the ground in  NY, PA, and at the Pentagon.  We especially remember and pray for the victim's families and friends whose lives have been directly affected and have never been the same.  I can't imagine how so many must feel....

I  found this "Where was My God on 911? on the The Drew Mariani Show Facebook page that K.S. submitted in the comments. Thanks for sharing this K.S.! I've never seen it before now and it says so much!

Where was My God on 911?...........

How many of us have heard that question "Where was your GOD when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was attacked?" Well I know where my GOD was the morning of September 11, 2001, and He was very busy!
He was trying to discourage anyone from taking these flights. Those four flights together held over 1000 passengers and there were only 266 aboard.
He was on 4 commercial flights giving terrified passengers the ability to stay calm. Not one of the family members who were called by a loved one on one of the hijacked planes said that passengers were screaming in the background. On one of the flights he was giving strength to passengers to try to overtake the hijackers.
He was busy trying to create obstacles for employees at the World Trade Center. After all, only around 20,000 were at the towers when the first jet hit. Since the buildings held over 50,000 workers, this was a Miracle in itself. How many of the people who were employed at the World Trade Center told the media that they were late for work or they had traffic delays.
He was holding up 2-110 story buildings so that 2/3 of the workers could get out. I was so amazed that the top of the towers didn't topple when the jets impacted. And when they did fall, they fell inward. GOD didn't allow them to topple over, as many more lives would have been lost.
And when the buildings went down, my GOD picked up almost 6,000 of his children and carried them home with him. Reassuring his frighten children that the worst was over and the best was yet to come.
He sat down and cried that 19 of His "misguided" children [terrorists] could have some much hate in their hearts. That they didn't choose Him, but another god that doesn't exist, and now they are lost forever.
He sent his children that are best trained for this disaster and had them save the few that were still alive, but unable to help themselves. And then sent many others to help in anyway they were needed.
He still isn't finished though, he held the love ones that were left behind in his arms. He comforts them daily. His other children are given the strength to reach out to them and help them in any way they can.
And I believe he will continue to help us in what is to come. He will give the people in charge of this great nation the strength and the wisdom to do the right thing. He would never leave us in our time of need.
So when anyone asks, "Where was your GOD on September 11", you can say "everywhere"! And yes, although this is without a doubt the worst thing I have seen in my life, I see God's miracles in every bit of it. I keep praying for those who don't believe in GOD, every chance I have. I can't imagine going through such a difficult time and not believing in GOD...
Life would be hopeless.

10 Years Ago Today: My Memories of 9.11.01

Today's date is Sunday, 9-11-11.  I don't remember what I was doing yesterday 10 years ago, but I remember exactly where I was 10 years ago today.

Where was I when our world and country were forever changed with the tragedies that occurred on September 11, 2001?

I was living in NC and our first child was only 16 months old and I was dropping her off at a Mother's Morning Out program.  I was 8 months pregnant with Baby #2 (we didn't find out that our 2nd was a boy until his birth) and I was looking forward to going on errands for a few hours while my daughter enjoyed some play time with children her age.
When I dropped my daughter off,  I remember my friend mentioning that a plane had just crashed into one of the Twin Towers in NY.  My initial thought was this was a terrible accident.  Then when I was shopping in a children's store everyone was talking about the news coverage.  By this time I called my husband who happened to be home sick from work and I'll never forget him telling me all that was happening so close to home.  "The towers just collapsed," he exclaimed, and like most of the country we were in shock, disbelief, confused, and saddened by what was taking place.

I remember thinking that I was about to bring another child into this crazy, disordered, and suffering world as the events of 9/11 unfolded.  But, I  know that with new life comes new hope.  I  thought that when my children were old enough,  I would have to tell them what happened on this dark day in history.  But how?

A few years ago, I found a great children's book about this sad day that Elizabeth Foss at In the Heart of My Home recommended. It is called The Little Chapel That Stood by A.B. Curtiss

Here is the product description from Amazon:

So if you have children that were too young at the time to even realize the sadness and severity of 9-11, I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated book that takes such a heart-wrenching and complicated topic down to a level that children can grasp.

We remember and pray today for all the lives that were lost on 9-11 in NY, PA, and at the Pentagon.  We especially remember and pray for the victim's families and friends whose lives have been directly affected and have never been the same.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths For His Name's sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;
For you are with me;

Your rod and Your staff - they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, You anoint my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord My whole life long.

"The Little Chapel That Stood" on 9-11-01

If you have been following my blog for a little while now, you know I traditionally post my (Organization) System Saturday post each Saturday.  However, because today's date is Saturday, 9-11-10, I will be reflecting on 9 years ago today...

Where was I when our world and country were forever changed with the tragedies that occurred on September 11, 2001?
