A "Birthday" Cake for Pentecost Sunday AND the "Birth" of My New Blog!
A Birthday Cake for Pentecost Sunday
Today happens to be the "birthday of the Church" or Pentecost Sunday!
The Catholic Church celebrates
What is Pentecost? Read more at my new blog at A Slice of Liturgical Life.
But, I'm so excited about my new blog, I'm getting ahead of myself so before you read more about Pentecost, I need to give you some background information below! Read on!
A New Blog is Born!
When I first started this blog in June 2010 (WOW! Was that really 7 years ago!) I was brand new to blogging and had fun creating my own blog as a hobby to document and savor the sweetness of faith, family and homeschooling. This blog's look has changed through the years, as well as my focus and mission of it. I have enjoyed the journey and have met some amazing friends! Some I have met in real life, but there are many others I would love to cross paths with besides in blog land.
In the last few years, I have noticed a trend with my posts. I realized that I blog a lot about the liturgical year and the Church's feast days. My passion has become to evangelize to my family, friends, the world and anyone who will listen, about the beautiful, rich history and devotions of the Catholic faith, as well as document the fun our family has had focusing on the liturgical Church year with prayers, activities, crafts, and creative foods.
With that being said, this little corner of blog land will be quieter and posts will be less frequent because my heart is now into creating a new blog A Slice of Liturgical Life. This is definitely a work in progress and will be for a long time, but I hope you will come along for the ride and learn about living the treasures of the Church with family, friends, joy and simplicity alongside me! My new blog is in it's infancy (do you hear what I did there? :) ) and it will take much time to grow, but I look forward to the journey ahead and I'm excited to share ideas, resources, and organization tips with you regarding living liturgically with family, friends, joy and simplicity!

Fall Fun: Corn Maze, Birthday, Camping, Visit from Dominican Nuns, TAN Homeschool Post!
I'm taking a break from planning an All Saints' Day party that I'm hosting this Sunday, Nov. 1 with some of our homeschool families to update the blog on some of the Fall fun we've had in the past few weeks.
On Thursday, October 22, (St. John Paul II's feast day) some of our homeschool families met at Hubb's Corn Maze, which is about an hour and a half away from where we live. This has become an annual tradition and it was so nice that my husband could join in on the fun. It was a beautiful, fun day!
On Friday, October 23, we celebrated my son's 14th birthday with a camp out in our backyard with a few of his friends. After playing football and soccer in the backyard, they roasted hot dogs, grilled cheeseburgers and made S'mores in our firepit. And here's the cake my son insisted I make. I didn't complain about the simplicity of his request compared to the other cakes I've made in the past and this gets the easiest cake I've "made" award. :)
Since our backyard campsite was already set up for my son's Friday night camp out, my husband and 2 of my daughters camped out in our backyard on Saturday night. They enjoyed this special time with their Dad.
If celebrating a birthday and camping out wasn't festive enough, we also celebrated and enjoyed meeting the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia from Nashville, TN that came to visit our parish from Friday, Oct. 23-25. My family met the two visiting nuns on Friday morning after morning Mass and then my oldest daughter and I were able to chat with them again on Saturday and Sunday as they chatted with the youth and their families about their life and vocation. It was so wonderful to meet them and be in their presence. They are so joyful and peaceful and I was really drawn to them. I could have chatted with them for hours! :)
One of the many questions they answered was about their habit and the significance and beautiful symbolism of each part of the their habit. Here's a video I took of Sister Peter Marie explaining the Dominican habit: (I'm having trouble uploading the video to this blog post, but click on the link below to my blog's Facebook page where I have the video)

However, I thought I would share 5 ways our family strives to live our faith during our homeschool days in hopes to encourage, support and inspire other families in their faith journeys."..... Read more on my post titled 5 Ways We Live Our Faith.
Hoping your week is a blessed one!

Hamburger Cupcakes: Easy, Fun and Yummy!
We just celebrated the 11th birthday of my daughter on June 10th and with my busy week this week with leading a group of 1st graders in Catholic Kidz Camp (a.k.a. "VBS"), I just remembered I didn't blog about the "cake" my daughter requested and had for her birthday. Of course, I did post pictures on my blog's Facebook page, but I always enjoy blogging about the birthday cakes for my children too.
My daughter was looking through Pinterest and found these adorable and creative hamburger cupcakes so she wanted to have these for her birthday instead of a cake. We clicked through the pin on Pinterest and found the directions to make them (minus the creative fries), though I tweaked the process a little to save time.
First, I made a box of yellow cake mix as mentioned in the original directions. Traditionally, I don't use box mixes because I have found some good recipes to make cake/cupcake batter from scratch, but I wanted to get the right "color" for the hamburger "buns". I then made some homemade brownie mix because they are just yummy and easy to make, though a box mix is easy too.
So far we have the "hamburger bun and patty."
So I was going to dye vanilla frosting with green, red, and yellow food coloring, but decided buying these (rather expensive) decorating cupcake icing cans was a much needed and welcomed time saver.
These were really fun and easy to make as we just squirted the icing for lettuce (green icing), ketchup (red icing), and mustard (yellow icing) on the outside rim of each brownie patty.
I found out that not only are cans of decorating icing pricey, but a
jar of sesame seeds was not cheap either, but it was all worth the cost,
especially since my son mentioned he wanted these cupcakes for his next
birthday! That works for me! :) My girls enjoyed brushing a little water on the top of each cupcake and then they sprinkled the sesame seeds on top that stuck because of the damp cupcake.
The cupcakes were a hit and quite delicious and the party guests enjoyed them alot, including the birthday girl!
Have a blessed week and I look forward to blogging about our Catholic Kidz Camp going on now as we "Set Sail with the Holy Spirit!" using another Growing with the Saints program!

Happy Birthday to Cupcake #4 and How to NOT have a Themed Birthday Party!
This post contains affiliate links.
On this day, November 19, 2007
You were and always will be the sweet blessing that was sent from Heaven.
My Oh My! Look how big you have grown!
These past 7 years with you have been full of blessings and have flown!
Your 3 older siblings couldn't come see you at the hospital when you
were born because your oldest sister had strep throat. :( I don't know if
they were more excited to meet you for the first time or if they were
more excited to see what "gift" you brought them. :)
You went from a little cutie pie...
To a big (sister) cutie pie in a blink of an eye!
Happy Birthday, our star daughter and gymnast!
This past weekend we celebrated our daughter's birthday with some of her friends and this was the first year I really didn't have a "theme" for the birthday party (I know, GASP!) I love themed parties and have had several in years past and you can check out all the cakes I've made in the past and probably guess what each birthday's theme had been.
But, for whatever reason, my daughter's party this year was "eclectic", but still so memorable and fun! I found out two things about hosting a non-theme birthday party.....1) My daughter still had a great time with friends and she had fun helping me make her cake with her sister. 2) I had a great time not stressing over NOT having a themed birthday party :) So for all you theme and non-theme party planners out there that want to know how to NOT have a themed birthday party, here's how I got one done...
You ask your soon-to-be 7 year old what kind of cake she wants. She suggests the homemade funfetti cake with chocolate mouse layers and homemade (green) cream cheese icing. I realized that's the same cake she requested last year, but last year's icing was pink, not green.
Then I asked what she wanted on top of her cake. She disappeared upstairs for a few minutes and came running down the stairs with her Rapunzel figurines. Perfect!
We asked our neighbor if we could borrow her #7 birthday candle. It sorta looks like a "1" candle, but hey it worked!
When the guests arrived the day of the party, I had them make a craft with tissue paper, glue and jars or "vases". I want to thank my dear friend, K.C., for the jars and tissue paper that she had left over from her twin daughters' party a few weeks prior.
I ran out 2 hours before the party started and bought pens, plastic flowers, and butterfly picks at the Dollar Store. I also went to the craft store to buy green floral tape. I then wrapped the sides and top of each pen with green floral tape with the flowers and the butterfly pick so each guest took home their colorful jar vase and flowered pen.
We then played some relay games outside. One game had the kids use plastic apples and they had to balance them on plastic spoons. In another relay game they had to run and drop the apples in a basket and tag the next person in line. The plastic apples and baskets were borrowed from K.C. too who had an "apple" themed birthday party for her children a few weeks ago.
Continuing with my daughter's non-themed birthday party, she asked to have a unicorn pinata. I was all for that since we were able to clear out almost all our Halloween candy by using it in the pinata! There are advantages to having a party just after Halloween and stuffing a unicorn with the loot is one of the best advantages!
The kids got a kick out of the unicorn becoming headless during the pinata beating. :)
Then it was time for some cake and ice cream! Here's the inside of the homemade funfetti cake with chocolate mousse layers:
So my first non-themed birthday party was a great success filled with smiles and memories! I may just have to plan another party like this one for future birthdays! :-)

7 Quick Takes: Our New Maid, Tim Staples, Outside Fun, I'm a Winner!
-1-
Last Friday night, Oct. 17, Tim Staples from Catholic Answers came and spoke at our parish in the evening. It was a wonderful talk as he used some of Pope Paul VI encyclicals and writings to explain how to evangelize the Good News and Catholic faith. It was a wonderful presentation and Staples used his experiences as a former Pentecostal youth minister, now Catholic apologist, to present an inspiring and humorous presentation.
At the beginning of October, I trained and hired the cutest maid. She did a super job vacuuming our kitchen floors. I think we will keep her since she loves the job! ;-)

-3-
So after the Tim Staples talk last Friday night, my husband and I got the stomach bug that night together. Oh joy! The entire week our kids were vomiting and now it was the parental units' turn! No fun! So the weekend was long and I was literally in bed all day last Saturday with nausea, dizziness, and sore muscles. Our son turned 13 last Sunday and we had to postpone his party until this weekend because we were afraid to spread the awful virus. He was disappointed to delay the party plans, but he was such a good sport about it. Thankfully, we were all feeling better by last Sunday, on our son's actual birthday so we did go out to eat as a family and had a backyard fire with the family and neighborhood friends as a way to celebrate 13 great years with our wonderful teenager!
-4-
Our little one is growing so fast! She will be 15 months on October 30! Can you believe it? This past week we took advantage of the beautiful Fall weather and all the kids and I headed to the park just walking/running/riding bike distance from our home. Cupcake #5 enjoyed playing in the park and eating the swing I pushed her in, which could explain the runny nose she has now. Grrr.....
-5-
Another way we took advantage of the beautiful weather is by having my daughter write her spelling words with chalk on our driveway which gave me some time to work with my other children on their homeschool lessons. My little speller was so proud of her chalk work!

Saint John Paul II FIRST feast day was just the other day on October 22 and in case you missed my post about this great day, HERE it is. Kendra at Catholic All Year also wrote a post about this beloved Saint HERE and in honor of JPII she had a giveaway. She was giving away some goodies from her trip to Spain and France, including a rosary, medals, and a bottle of Lourdes water. Well, I just got an email this morning from Kendra telling me that I was the winner of the giveaway! I am so thankful and excited! I love visiting blogs and commenting because I enjoy getting to know other bloggers this way, but when my comment helps me win a giveaway, that's just icing on the cake! :) I can't wait to see what comes in the mail!
-7-
Another busy weekend coming up filled with soccer games and my son's 13th birthday party, in real life! (finally!) I plan on making a Campfire Cake inspired by Jessica at Shower of Roses. Stay tuned to see how it all turns out! :) Have a blessed weekend!

7 Quick Takes: 7 Reasons Why I Haven't Posted in 7 Days
-1-

-2-
Speaking of my daughter's birthday, the 2nd reason I haven't posted in awhile is because we were busy celebrating her special day! On her birthday, my mom and sister (who was visiting from out of town) took my daughter to horse back riding lessons where she got to groom the horse also. Then at night we played a family game of bowling with my sister and parents and went out to eat.
-3-
A few days before the birthday celebrations, I was able to attend my first priest ordination Mass for a young man who was ordained at our church. It was a beautiful Mass! The picture above shows how the line of priests goes up to the newly ordained priests and exchanges a hug of congratulations and welcoming into the priesthood.
-4-
As mentioned above, my younger sister visited last week and she brought her sweet baby boy. It was so fun hanging out with my little sis who is now a Mom! This was the first time we met the new addition to the family and we snapped some cute photos of my little girl giving her new cousin hugs and kisses and acting unsure about what to do with the little guy! It was alot of fun to watch her around him! :)
-5-
Reason #5 I haven't posted in awhile...Father's Day was last week and I was busy celebrating this special day with my Dad and the fabulous Father of my fab five! We cooled down and relaxed at my parent's neighborhood pool for Father's Day.
-6-
Beach or blogging??? Hmmm...let's just say it's been so difficult to sit down to blog during the day while enjoying the hot sun, surf, and sand and then I'm too tired at night to actually sit in front of the computer to blog. This picture of our littlest one was taken last week during a soccer tournament on the beach that my son and one of my daughter's played in over the weekend.
-7-
And finally reason #7 for my blogging break...we finally had a birthday party with some of her friends for my 10 year old turning 10! It was on the beach and she didn't want a cake made for her this year. Rather, she wanted to make ice cream sundaes with a few of her friends. It was great time to swim and celebrate with our daughter who hit the double digits!

Have a blessed weekend!
