Turtle Talk
Yesterday our homeschool group was invited to listen to 2 students in public high school who were doing their senior project on loggerhead sea turtles, which are fascinating creatures close to my hometown. The students happen to have siblings in our homeschool group. The weather and the beautiful beach setting were perfect for the presentations and worked well with the number of children and the activities that were planned.
Here is one presenter, B.H., explaining some facts about loggerhead sea turtles.
While B.H. was talking turtle talk, her friend S.C. was down the beach in the background talking to another group about what threatens turtles' survival and how we can help them thrive.
After the presentations were made then it was time to do more fun activities!
Collecting trash on the beach to help keep the wrong stuff off the coastlines and out of our oceans is always important and more productive with several little helpers!
Making turtles in the sand was a huge hit!
My daughter and her friends even made some baby turtles...so cute!
The presenters even prepared "Terrific Turtle" awards to give to the kids after they made their sand turtles. All the kids did so well on their turtle creations.
Another activity that the teen presenters planned was to go on a hunt to find a turtle nest that was filled with eggs (ping pong balls)
The kids were told to look for these turtle tracks in the sand to help locate the nest.
Digging for the "eggs"
After all that work to learn more about loggerhead sea turtles it was time to eat a turtle cupcake made by B.H. So cute!
Here is a shot I took of some of the kids that now know much more about loggerhead sea turtles and how to make sure they continue to thrive. Thanks B.H. and S.C. for the great presentations and hard work!
