Today, October 4, we celebrate another wonderful feast day, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
You know you are thinking about A Slice of Liturgical Life too much when you think to grab a bag of animal crackers at the grocery as a simple way to remember St. Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of animals. :)
We read a little about Saint Francis from Saints and Angels and read his story in Saint Francis of Assisi by Father Lovasik while we snacked on the animal crackers. It's always amazing to read about another Saint, like St. Francis, that had the wounds of Christ on his hands, feet, and side (stigmata). We also watched Francis, The Knight of Assisi from CCC of America that I blogged about before Pope Francis' visit to the U.S. last week.
The statue of St. Francis was given to our family as a gift several years ago and I have it displayed in our home year round.
Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
Amen.

Tracy~ What a lovely collection of activities/books for St F's feast day!
ReplyDeleteWe brought our turtle to be blessed yesterday at our parish's blessing of the animals. We're CERTAIN that has kept her healthy all these years! She'll be 5 on Christmas Day!---- She was a Santa gift :)
Timmy has a goal of being a vet and just adores animals. My sister, hos godmother bought him a gorgeous statue of St F for his bday last year ...it's one of those cement statues you'd put in your yard......for his office one day in the future...it's huge! He keeps it in his room surrounded by stuffed animals.. .He's planning on choosing francis as his conf name next year....
I did not know of the CCC film on St F. Will have to check it out. Would that be age appropriate for an almost 13yo and a 15 yo...or maybe a little too young for them? It looks great.
A couple of eyars ago, we did a St F project that I found at Jennifer's blog...i link to it here if you're interested. She has great ideas, as always.
Thx Tracy for sharing all these resources!
I'll 'see" you online soon.
Hi Chris!
ReplyDeleteAwww that's so sweet about your pet turtle! I love turtles! And that's amazing about Timmy getting the huge St. Francis statue! Love his idea of keeping his stuffed animals around it!
As far as the CCC of America movie, it is animated, but even my older kids will watch it for its 30 minute duration.
I'd love to see the St. Francis link if you liked to link it. Thanks! I feel like I did a St. Francis project with the kids too, but can't remember if I blogged about it or not and I haven't found it on my blog if I did post.
Thanks Chris!
